School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences

The University of Western Australia is one of Australia's strongest research universities and has among the highest undergraduate entrance qualifications. The School of Biomedical, Biomolecular & Chemical Sciences was recently formed at UWA encompassing the Disciplines of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology and Physiology. As a member in the new Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences, the School represents a major part of the restructure of Science at The University of Western Australia and is intended to align the teaching and research programs with the rapidly evolving developments of modern molecular sciences.

The School has a vigorous research culture supported by peer-reviewed national and international grants and its Disciplines attract high-quality Honours and Postgraduate students. In 2005 the Biochemistry and Chemistry components of the School will occupy a new state-of-the-art Molecular and Chemical Sciences building as part of the University's commitment to developing major molecular sciences teaching and research programs.

The School currently comprises 175 academic, research and general staff with 65 Honours students, 110 PhD students and over 2,500 undergraduate students. It has an annual research and teaching budget in excess of $17M.

As well as fostering teaching and research in the traditional biomedical and chemical disciplines, the school promotes new interdisciplinary programs that span fundamental to applied and clinical studies in science.
