Professor Sydney R Hall
Professor Syd Hall
is the inaugural Head of the new School of Biomedical and Chemical Sciences
in the Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences. The school has been formed from
the previous departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Chemistry,
Microbiology, and Physiology, and the Crystallography Centre. Prior to this
appointment he was Director of the Crystallography Centre, and the Centre
for Microscopy and Microanalysis.
Professor Hall is currently
a Board Member of the UWA Institute of Advanced Studies and the Lawrence Art
Gallery Board. His scientific interests are principally in the area of knowledge
representation and data ontologies, and he is Co-editor of the International
Tables Volume "Crystallographic Information" and Member of the IUCr
Commissions on International Tables, Nomenclature, and CIF.
As Head of the Crystallography
Centre he was responsible in 1997 for the formation and funding of the Biological
Structure Laboratory which is currently housed in Pharmacology at the QEII
Centre. He is past President of the Society for Crystallographers in Australia
and New Zealand (SCANZ), and was the Foundation President of the Asian Crystallographic
Association (AsCA) which is the regional professional association of the societies
in India, China, Japan, Korea, and Australia/NZ.
Professor Hall is the
Chair of the Organising Committee for the 2003 Conference of AsCA03 and Crystal-23;
the first occasion that the AsCA and SCANZ meetings have been combined.
